SHOULD BOTTLED WATER BE BANNED???
I recently watched a story on ABC about some cities starting to ban bottled water. The news coverage I watched on this issue was so one sided. The whole complaint wasn't about the amount of energy and oil it takes to make plastic bottles. It was about the distribution of the product from one place to another. They targeted bottled water as though it is the only product to come from outside of the USA. The bottle that the reporter was holding was Evian. He was talking about how much fuel is burned to ship it across the ocean. Then once it hits land, the amount of fuel and energy that is consumed before it reaches the store shelves. Do you really think for one minute that bottled water is the only item on that ship being delivered to us here in the United States? Thousand upon thousand of products we use each and everyday are delivered the exact same way. If you take a trip to any city dump you will find more than just empty bottles of water. It is absurd to target one item, such as bottled water, as the main reason for global warming. The manufacturing and distribution of plastic bottles around the globe is not responsible for melting the polar ice caps. The reporter mentioned that 4 out of 5 plastic bottles end up in landfills. This is where you can help. Make recycling a priority! There is no reason for any city in the United States to ban bottled water. If they are going to do that, then they should put a ban on batteries and any product that uses batteries. If they are really that concerned for the environment, there are a million other things they should be banning besides bottled water. No...I am not saying we should ban batteries...I'm just saying there are far worse things being dumped in our landfills than water bottles. I would like to see the media start focusing on something that really matters. The story shouldn't be about the plastic bottles. It should be about those oversized tanker ships sucking up our oil. Or perhaps those semi trucks polluting our highways. We need to be working on the technology to ship more efficiently across the globe. All of those FedEx and UPS trucks you see zipping down the road are hauling alot more than just bottled water.
Big cities like San Francisco are tricking its citizens into thinking they care about the environment. The truth is, it's all about money. Bottled water is BIG business in the United States! Instead of these profits going to corporate companies around the globe...local governments are passing laws to keep the money in their pockets. Forcing consumers to quinch their thirst with municipal tap water. If you prefer to drink bottled water that came from the French Alps or from a Norwegian glacier, you should be able to do so. Most cities have a recycling program in place, but often are voluntary rather than mandatory. If 4 out of 5 plastic bottles are ending up in landfills...then that city should be doing more to enforce recycling. I can assure you that there are far more Coke and Pepsi products, more milk containers, shampoo bottles, and more laundry detergent bottles than there are empty bottles of water in route to the local city dump. Be responsible for everything you use. Don't allow our government to start banning products this way. If they will do that to bottled water...who knows what they will do next?
